Immersed in a green setting among rows of vineyards and olive trees in front of an evocative view of Torgiano, Deruta, Assisi. This farmhouse was one of the Rustics built in Umbria around the “Castle of the Knights of Malta”. Both the Castle located in Magione, that the houses scattered in the surrounding area, were the residence of the religious, but also hospitium for those pilgrims going to Rome and in the Holy Land that used an internal branch of the Albe di Serra, the Castle was strategically probably built between 1160 and 1170 near the small pass that separates Lake Trasimeno from nearby Perugia. To date it is at the center of a thriving farm. The Castle of Magione becomes the residence of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in September.
Located in the heart of Umbria between Torgiano and Perugia along La Strada del vino, Villa dei Cavalieri is the ideal base for exploring Umbria: a region of unrivaled beauty and charm. Umbria is an ancient land of Saints, Poets, Artists, and centuries old traditions, wines and renowned foods. It is a region that houses some of the most exquisite artistic works of Cimabue, Giotto and Benozzo Gozzoli, and some of the most notable examples of medieval architecture in central Italy. Some of the most important works in the history of art are not far from Casale dei Cavalieri at the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia and the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. Umbria also hosts many important international events such as: Eurochocolate, Umbria Jazz, Festival dei Due Mondi and The Bevagna Market of Bevagna. Thanks to its uncontaminated landscape, its art and history, its foods, its wines and its picturesque medieval towns, Umbria attracts, fascinates and invites to calm. Casale dei Cavalieri is very close to all the major places of interest: within half an hour you can reach Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto and Spello among others; Tuscany can be reached in just over an hour; Rome and Florence are both two hours away and can also be reached by train from Foligno station, which is 15 minutes away. The journey by car or train to all these places passes through bucolic landscapes with a myriad of medieval villages lying on green hills and is therefore an integral part of your excursion. The short distances will allow you to “absorb” the places of tourist interest and the landscape, but at the same time to spend a pleasant and relaxing stay at our facility.
The Casale dei Cavalieri is the result of a splendid restoration of an old farmhouse in the heart of the rolling hills and Umbrian vineyards: an oasis of refinement and tranquility where time seems to stop. The terracotta floors, handmade bricks and ancient beams have been restored to their former glory. The landscape captures the true “essence of Umbria”, with its uncontaminated nature and hills, picturesque medieval towns, extensive vineyards, olive groves, and majestic oak woods. Inside the structure there are several common areas where you can relax and fully capture the welcoming atmosphere of Casale dei Cavalieri: the Reading Room, a fireplace and the stone walls; the inviting bar area, the winery connected with the brand new and spectacular tasting area.
